Why?
This was a fun project in the machine shop. As an introductory course, we were tasked with machining our own compressed air motor with the given tools.
A compressed air motor only runs if every rotating and sealing interface is machined tightly enough to hold pressure without binding. The part prints demanded ±0.005” across different materials.
Approach
- 01
Machined aluminum, brass, steel, and polyacetal components on the CNC mill, lathe, drill press, and band saw, selecting speeds, feeds, and workholding per material.
- 02
Assembled, measured, and iterated until the motor ran smoothly on shop air.
